Call Pastors Well

Sun 4/20

By: Matthew Kruse

It seems that licenses to preach in the church at Ephesus were arriving in the proverbial Cheerios box. As happened often in the early life of Jesus’ church, chaos was the norm, and in the beautiful but wild infancy of the Ephesian church, certain men found themselves inheriting the title of pastor who should not have. While the role of elder is an honorable one, appointing dishonorable men to the task will mean disaster for a church. Paul challenges Timothy to be really slow and really careful before appointing anyone to serve as an undershepherd to Jesus. The nature of the call necessitates that only qualified men with solid character and broad shoulders be affirmed. Paul’s famous bullet trait list of character traits contrasts sharply with what we know about the false teachers and paints a clear picture of what kind of a man a church should be looking for to serve as pastors.
